Commercial Diesel Tank Replacement : A Technical Case Study
Initial Assessment & Requirements
At the outset of this commercial diesel tank replacement project, our team conducted a thorough site assessment that revealed favourable conditions for HIAB vehicle access through a 360cm wide gate. This initial evaluation was crucial for planning the replacement of an ageing steel tank with a new 5800L unit.
Project Scope
The project encompassed several key technical components:
- Removal and temporary storage of existing diesel fuel
- Decommissioning and removal of the existing tank
- Custom base construction
- Installation of new 5800L steel tank
- Fuel line reconnection and system recommissioning
Technical Implementation
Phase 1: Site Preparation & Fuel Management
Our first priority was securing the existing fuel:
- Systematic drainage of water from the bund area
- Professional removal of diesel into temporary holding tanks
- Separation of water/sludge from usable fuel
- Secure on-site storage during tank replacement
Phase 2: Tank Decommissioning
The removal process required precise execution:
- Disconnection of existing pipework from the tank
- Bund area clearance of debris and leaves
- HIAB-assisted tank removal, utilising the pre-assessed access route
Phase 3: Base Construction
Critical to the new installation was the construction of a stable support system:
- Construction of three brick pillars, precisely measured at 1935mm wide x 300mm high
- Pillars specifically engineered to match existing outlet pipe height
- Verification of underlying concrete pad integrity
Phase 4: New Tank Installation & Connection
The installation phase included:
- HIAB-assisted placement of the new 5800L steel tank
- Installation of new pipework including:
- 1″ fuel line connection with appropriate valves and fittings
- 2″ fill point connection with all necessary materials
- System integration with existing boiler feed pipe
Phase 5: Commissioning
Final steps ensured system integrity:
- Filtered transfer of stored fuel back into the new tank
- Comprehensive connection testing
- System pressure testing
- Removal of all project-generated waste
Compliance & Quality Assurance
All work was conducted in strict accordance with OFTEC regulations, ensuring both safety and operational efficiency. Our team maintained professional standards throughout, from initial site assessment through final commissioning.
Project Outcomes
The successful completion of this tank replacement project delivered:
- A fully compliant new installation
- Minimal disruption to site operations
- Professional waste management
- System optimisation through new components and connections
