Case Study: Fuel Tank Decommissioning & Removal – 2 x 3,600L Steel Tanks

LV Fuel Services was contracted to carry out the complete decommissioning and removal of two 3,600L steel fuel tanks, in Nottingham, covering everything from waste fuel extraction and safe tank disconnection through to physical lifting, full pipework removal, and responsible disposal.

This project is a strong example of our end-to-end fuel tank removal service, delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with industry regulations.

The Challenge

Decommissioning and removing large steel fuel tanks is not a straightforward task.

At 3,600 litres each, these tanks present significant challenges in terms of weight, size, and the volume of residual waste fuel that needs to be safely managed before any lifting can take place.

Beyond the tanks themselves, the client also required the complete removal of all associated pipework running to the boiler, as well as the fillpoint cabinet – ensuring the site was left fully clear with no redundant fuel infrastructure remaining.

The client needed a reliable, experienced contractor who could manage the entire process from start to finish in a single, efficient operation.

Our Solution

LV Fuel Services mobilised a fully equipped team to site, arriving with two specialist vehicles – a HIAB crane lorry and a support van – along with all the tools and equipment needed to complete the job safely and without delay.

Our approach ensured the entire decommissioning, removal, and site clearance was handled in one well-organised visit, minimising disruption to the client.

Stage 1 – Waste Fuel Removal

The first stage of the project focused on safe fuel extraction from both tanks. Our engineers carefully removed all residual waste fuel and transferred it into secure holding tanks for proper disposal.

With two large-capacity steel tanks on site, the volume of waste fuel to be managed was significant, making this a critical step in the process.

LV Fuel Services follows strict procedures throughout fuel extraction to ensure full environmental compliance and zero risk of spillage or contamination.

Stage 2 – Tank Disconnection & Preparation

With both 3,600L steel tanks fully emptied, our engineer proceeded to disconnect them from the existing site pipework.

This included the safe disconnection of both the feed line and the fill point on each tank, fully preparing them for the lifting stage.

Correct disconnection of steel tanks of this size requires both technical knowledge and hands-on experience, and is a vital step in ensuring the lifting operation can proceed safely.

Stage 3 – HIAB Lifting & Tank Removal

Once both tanks were fully prepared, our HIAB crane lorry was carefully positioned alongside. Using heavy-duty lifting slings securely wrapped around each 3,600L steel tank, our team lifted both tanks with precision and loaded them onto the van for transportation.

Given the size and weight of these steel tanks, the use of a HIAB crane and proper rigging equipment was essential to carry out the lift safely and without risk to the site or surrounding area.

Both tanks were then transported to an approved facility for safe disposal and recycling, in line with current environmental and waste management regulations.

Stage 4 – Full Pipework & Fillpoint Cabinet Removal

With the tanks removed, our team completed the final stage of the project – the full removal of all remaining pipework running from the tank location to the boiler, along with the fillpoint cabinet.

Leaving redundant fuel pipework and infrastructure in place is not only untidy but can present a safety and compliance risk, so complete removal was essential to hand the site back in a fully clean and cleared condition.

All removed materials were taken away for appropriate disposal, leaving the site with no trace of the previous fuel system.

The Result

Both 3,600L steel tanks were fully decommissioned and removed, all pipework to the boiler was stripped out, and the fillpoint cabinet was taken away – all completed safely, efficiently, and without incident in a single site visit. The client was left with a completely cleared site, fully compliant and ready for whatever comes next.

This project is a clear example of what LV Fuel Services delivers on every job: expert fuel tank decommissioning, professional HIAB lifting, complete pipework removal, responsible waste fuel disposal, and a hassle-free experience from start to finish.
